Chapter Twelve

Sunlight peeked through the cracks in the window blinds. John reached up to rub his eyes with the backs of his hands. He was so warm. His room was usually freezing in the morning.

He rolled over, but his legs were tangled with something. Why was he so warm? Something soft pressed against his back.

John opened his eyes and looked down at his legs. Why am I wearing pants?

He looked up. Unfamiliar posters, string lights, and trinkets stared back at him. A tiny Spider-Man in a cowboy hat nodded at him from the top of the dresser.

He wasn’t in his room. The warm thing against his back was Hayden, who was still fast asleep with his arm slung over John’s stomach and one leg tangled between John’s.

And, judging from the sunlight, John was running very, very late.

“Shit! Shit, shit shit shit,” John rolled out of bed and looked around the room frantically for his things.

Hayden peeked his head out of the blankets, his tousled hair flattened on one side from his pillow. “Wha? Whatis i’?” he asked, squinting down at John as he stumbled to pull his shoes on.

Whipping out his phone to check the time, John’s heart sank. It was already 9:30. He was supposed to meet Julia at the cafe at nine. He saw the notifications for texts, missed calls, and his heart pounded against his rib cage. On top of that, his phone was almost dead.

“Shit, I fucked up, I fucked up,” he whispered to himself. He turned to Hayden, who was rumpled and confused in bed. “I’m never late!”

Hayden blinked back at him.

John ran across the hall to his room, leaving both of their doors open. He threw on deodorant, a new pair of socks, and checked to make sure the right notebooks were in his backpack.

“Sorry Hayden, it’s not your fault, but I have to leave right now,” he whisper-shouted into Hayden’s room.

Hayden grumbled from his bed and waved goodbye. John closed their doors and jogged down the hall towards the exit.
